Pertenece al Distrito Electoral N\u00ba 9 y a la 4\u00aa Circunscripci\u00f3n Senatorial, Coquimbo. Con una superficie de 1.896 Km2 y una poblaci\u00f3n de 12.869 habitantes, acoge a un 2,24% de la poblaci\u00f3n total de la regi\u00f3n, donde un 61,19% es poblaci\u00f3n rural y un 38,81%, urbana. (Datos Censo 2002, proyectados al 2006).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El origen de la palabra Combarbal\u00e1 es diverso. Una versi\u00f3n dice que el nombre original seria \u00abCocambala\u00bb, escrito como lo escuch\u00f3 un espa\u00f1ol, el que no necesariamente puede ser una palabra sino la uni\u00f3n de varias, como \u00abKo\u00bb(agua), \u00abKam\u00bb(lejos) y \u00abWala\u00bb(p\u00e1jaro acu\u00e1tico) en mapudung\u00fan.
